Recently, a team of experts from Stanford University used citation impact data from Scopus to publish the “World’s Top 2% Scientists 2020” list. This ranking is divided into two categories: the “Lifetime Scientific Impact Ranking (1960–2020)” and the “2020 Annual Scientific Impact Ranking.”

The data for the ranking comes from Scopus, the world’s largest citation abstract database, and is evaluated using the following six key indicators:

1. Total citations

2. Hirsch h-index

3. Co-authorship-adjusted Schreiber Hm-index

4. Single-authored papers

•5. Single or first-authored papers

•6. Citations of single, first, or last-authored papers

These metrics provide a comprehensive measure of a scientist’s long-term research performance.

This initiative is a collaboration among Professor John P.A. Ioannidis’ team at Stanford University, Dr. Kevin W. Boyack, and Elsevier’s Director of Research Data Analysis, Jeroen Baas. The first edition was published in August 2019 in an international journal, followed by the second edition in October 2020, which attracted widespread attention. The current release—the 2021 edition—utilizes data extracted from the Scopus database as of August 2021, covering the period from 1960 to 2020.

In the 2021 edition, the analysis team selected the top 2% of scientists from nearly 8 million researchers worldwide. The list spans five major areas: applied sciences, health sciences, natural sciences, economics and social sciences, and arts and humanities. The rankings are categorized into 20 main disciplines and 176 sub-disciplines, and they present a dataset distinct from the global list of the top 180,000 highly cited researchers. The accompanying map (Figure 1) illustrates the geographical distribution and the number of researchers on the list. Among the most influential 2% of scientists, the largest group is from the United States, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan (ranked 5th), South Korea (ranked 17th), and Taiwan, which is ranked 19th with a total of 1,479 researchers included.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Hua-Pin Chen on this well-deserved recognition, and we look forward to his continued contributions to the scientific community.
